"Impromptu Op. 90 No. 2" from Franz Schubert

The origin of the word impromptu is coming from the Latin expression "in promptu esse" which means "to be on call" or "to be on hand". In musical terms it means a free-form musical composition with the character of an extempore improvisation as if prompted by the spirit of the moment, usually for a solo instrument.
